You paid for a website. It is live, it looks right, and a year later the phone still isn't ringing. The owner assumes something is broken. Usually nothing is. The site was set up for search once, at launch, and nothing has been done since.
It usually comes down to a gap in what was explained. Nobody spells out that SEO has two parts, so "SEO included" gets heard as "ranking included". Then, when the owner goes looking for answers, a free online audit tool or an AI chat can tell them something confident and wrong.
The short answer: basic SEO is included in the websites I build. It sets the site up so Google can find and read it. It does not put the site on page 1. Ranking is ongoing work, and it is a separate service.
What one of my clients found out after a year
A few years ago I built a site for an auto-service business in Gauteng. It launched with basic SEO, the way all my sites do. I offered long-term SEO at the same time. The client didn't want it. They didn't see the need, and I doubt they understood what it was for at that point.
About a year later the site was live and indexed, but when I checked by hand, it was sitting on page 7 for the search that mattered to their business. The client couldn't understand why. They had paid for a website and expected it to bring in customers.
This time the client was willing to listen, so I could go into much greater detail. Basic SEO comes with the website. Long-term SEO is an additional service that fine-tunes the site over time. The site had the first and not the second.

What basic SEO covers, and what it doesn't
Two different jobs
Basic SEO (built into the website)
- Search Console setup, including the sitemap upload and indexing requests
- Google Business Profile and Bing Places for Business setup
- Page titles and meta descriptions, written once
- Headings and page structure
- A mobile-friendly build
Long-term SEO (a separate service)
- Keyword research: finding what people actually search for
- New pages and blog posts aimed at specific searches
- Titles and meta descriptions reviewed as searches change
- Watching Search Console and fixing indexing problems as they appear
- Profile posts, photos and reviews, kept up to date
- Link building and business directory listings
- A regular check on where you rank and what to fix
Basic SEO is a job done once at launch. Long-term SEO is work that repeats.
Basic SEO makes sure Google can read your site. Ongoing SEO is what gives it a reason to show it.Tsundzu Mlati, Elamilanga Web Design
One website, hundreds of searches
Say you run a window tinting shop. People don't search for "window tinting" and stop there. They search "dark window tinting", "25% tint", "window tinting near me" and "how dark can my tint be legally". Those are all different searches. Each one has its own competition and its own results page.

The question is whether your site appears for any of them. That is what ranking means, and finding out which searches to go after is what keyword research is for. A site with basic SEO has been set up properly for the pages it was built with. It has not been researched against what people in your area are typing into Google.
Why it never really finishes
You are not the only tinting shop working on this. The businesses on page 1 have to keep working to stay there, and the ones below them are working to take their place. There is no point where the job is done and you can leave it. That is why long-term SEO is a monthly service and can't be a once-off payment.
Can't I just ask AI to audit my site?
You can. It's free and takes a minute. The same client asked an AI model for a website audit and sent me the report. I indulged them and went through it.
By my count, about 60% of what it reported was wrong. It said the site needed to be added to Google Search Console. It already was. The AI couldn't get into the account, so it assumed there wasn't one. It said the same about the Google Business Profile, which had been created and verified. It guessed at keywords it thought were relevant and told the client to add them to the site. It rewrote meta descriptions in a way that didn't fit the business or where it operates. The remaining 40% or so fell under long-term SEO, which had not been started.

Nothing in the way the AI delivered the report said it was guessing. It read like findings.Tsundzu Mlati, Elamilanga Web Design
I could dispute those findings only because of my knowledge and my experience. That is the risk. Someone acts on a wrong finding, then builds the next decision on top of it. To use an audit like that you need to know which findings are real, and you need to be able to check them against the accounts themselves. Then you need to be able to fix what's left, and keep improving it over time, across the website, the Business Profile, social media and content.
What long-term SEO costs
Long-term SEO costs money every month because the work happens every month. My long-term SEO plans start from R2,500 per month.
If you would rather start with an audit, a full audit report is R1,500. It lists each issue, the possible cause, and the recommended solution or long-term plan.
For context, one South African agency publishes SEO retainers of R3,500 to R8,000 a month and audits from R2,500. That is one agency's published range, not a standard, and prices change. Nobody honest can promise you page 1 for a fixed fee.
Do you actually need it?
Not always. If your work comes from referrals and word of mouth, and the site is mostly there so people can check you out, basic SEO may be all you need. It depends on the business.
If you need new customers to find you on Google, and competitors already appear above you, basic SEO will not close that gap on its own. The gap will not close by leaving it, either. If you're unsure, check where you stand every few months, not after a year. If your site is getting no traffic and you don't know why, this post covers the common causes.
Get a free SEO audit of your website
If you have a website and aren't sure where it stands, I'll audit it for free. I look at your site and send you a written summary of up to five of its biggest SEO issues within 2 business days of getting your request. It's one audit per business, with no obligation. I take 15 free audits a month, and if the month is full I'll tell you when the next one opens.
I do it by hand, not with an AI tool. I'll ask you to add me as a read-only user on your Search Console and Google Business Profile, so I'm checking the facts, not guessing at them. It's an audit, not a fix, and I won't promise you rankings. If you want the detail behind each issue, the full audit report is R1,500.

Not sure where your website stands?
Send me your website address and I'll send back up to five of the biggest issues.

Is SEO included when a website is built?
Basic SEO is included in the websites I build. That covers Search Console setup with a sitemap upload and indexing requests, Google Business Profile and Bing Places for Business setup, page titles and meta descriptions, headings and page structure, and a mobile-friendly build. Ranking for searches is ongoing work and is a separate service.
Why can't SEO be a once-off payment?
Because it never finishes. Competitors keep working on their own SEO, and searches change. A once-off payment covers the setup, and the ongoing work is paid for as it happens.
Do I need an SEO specialist for my small business website?
It depends on where your customers come from. If they find you through Google, then yes, someone needs to be doing it regularly. If they come through referrals, you may not.
How long does SEO take to show results?
Usually months, not weeks. Anyone promising page 1 in a few weeks is guessing.
How much does SEO cost in South Africa?
It varies by agency. One South African agency publishes retainers of R3,500 to R8,000 a month. My long-term SEO plans start from R2,500 per month, and a full audit report is R1,500. Ask what the monthly work includes before you compare prices.
